Indians are known for their intelligence all over the world. Time and again we have proved that when it comes to academics, our people are always in the top bracket and command respect.
But in spite of all those achievements, some people in the western world still consider us inferior and more often that not, believe that we don’t have a proper of their language i.e. English language.
Sometime ago, a shocking incident happened in the United States of America, when a CNN journalist allegedly made a “racist” remark against Indian-American national spelling champion Ananya Vinay.
Ananya who just last week made us proud by winning the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee Championship came under this insensitive racist attack by the CNN journalist. Ananya who created a lot of buzz after winning the prestigious award by invited by CNN for an interview but anchors Alisyn Camerota and Chris Cuomo made the process a pretty awkward and racial one.
Ananya had won the championship after she had rightly spelled macrocain, a type of fabric.
The CNN journalist asked her to spell “covfefe“, a word recently devised by US president Donald Trump. She was also asked about the word’s origin but what followed that shocked the entire audience.
Alisyn Camerota one of the interviewers said,
“COVFEFE IS A NONSENSE WORD BUT WE’RE NOT SURE THAT ITS ROOT IS IN SANSKRIT — WHICH IS PROBABLY WHAT YOU’RE USED TO.”
What on earth was that journalist thinking? People who live in India are not familiar with Sanskrit, how could that little girl who lives in California could be?
That journalist’s comment didn’t go down well with people who slammed her on twitter for her insensitive racial comment.
Here’s how People responded to her comment:
