Donald Trump Suspended H1-B Visas And Sundar Pichai Criticised This Decision

In a huge blow for the techies of India, who are eyeing the jobs in the America market, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday suspended H-1B visas till the end of this year. Besides this, several other types of foreign work visas were also suspended until the end of this year in order to protect the US workers from the pandemic in a crucial election year.

For the unversed, H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows the companies in the United States to employ foreign workers in specialized fields. As per the reports, before the Coronavirus pandemic, the US had issued 85,000 H-1B visas annually, out of which Indians get 60,000.

“Under the extraordinary circumstances of the economic contraction resulting from the Covid-19 outbreak, certain nonimmigrant visa programs authorizing such employment pose an unusual threat to the employment of American workers,” Trump said in his order.

He added:

We have plenty of people looking for jobs. I think it’s going to make a lot of people very happy. And it’s common sense”

However, now after the suspension of H-1B, this move will badly affect the Indian industry, especially the IT sector.

Expressing his disappointment over the same, CEO of Google, Sunder Pichai wrote how immigration is the reason behind the success of Google. He wrote:

“Immigration has contributed immensely to America’s economic success, making it a global leader in tech, and also Google the company it is today. Disappointed by today’s proclamation – we’ll continue to stand with immigrants and work to expand opportunity for all.”
