On Tuesday, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio announced that it will hike its tariff rates in the next few weeks. The statement from Jio came as a big surprise to everyone. The news was made a day after Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Ltd announced a hike in their call and data charges from next month onwards.

Talking about the same, in a statement, the Reliance Jio claimed that the telecom regulator TRAI is likely to initiate a consultation process for revision in telecom tariffs. The statement read:

Like other operators, we will also work with the government and comply with the regulatory regime to strengthen the industry to benefit Indian consumers and take measures including an appropriate increase in tariffs in next few weeks in a manner that does not adversely impact data consumption or growth in digital adoption and sustains investments.

As per sources, the decision to hike the tariff rates by the telecoms is in response to the government constantly asking the companies to stop the long-drawn price war and set their business houses in order.
