Google has announced the discontinuation of its Google Pay app effective June 4, 2024, as part of its efforts to streamline payment methods.
This decision will impact users in the United States, with the company opting to merge the functionality into Google Wallet.
While Google Pay was replaced by Google Wallet in 2022, the service continued in various countries. However, the standalone Google Pay app in the US will cease to function, with users smoothly transitioning to Google Wallet, where key features like in-store tap-to-pay and payment method management will be retained.
According to a recent blog post by the company, usage of Google Wallet is significantly higher than Google Pay in the US.

ToggleWill it Impact Users in India?
Users of Google Pay in India and Singapore need not worry about the shutdown, as the service will persist in these regions to cater to their specific requirements. The announcement primarily concerns the US version of the standalone Google Pay app, with the transition expected to be seamless, maintaining popular features.
After June 4, 2024, US users will be able to access and transfer funds to their bank accounts via the Google Pay website, as stated in a blog post by Google.
In the transition process, Google will also phase out features such as peer-to-peer payments, management of Google Pay balance, and “find offers and deals.” Users in the US accustomed to the latter feature can now explore new deals via Search, as recommended by the company. Despite the discontinuation, affected users in the US will still be able to transfer their Google Pay balance to bank accounts using the Google Pay website even after June 4, 2024.
Google Wallet Features
The latest version of the Google Wallet app for Android can be downloaded from Google Play, while card management can be handled on the Google Pay website. Google Wallet offers a wide range of functionalities, including in-store payments, transit fare payments, boarding passes for flights, digital storage of driver’s licenses and loyalty cards, car key integration for vehicle access, and management of credit and debit card payments, among others.
In the US, the Google Pay service will continue through Google Wallet after June 4, 2024.
