Renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murthy, who is the mother-in-law of Rishi Sunak recently credited her daughter Akshata Murthy for making her husband the Prime Minister of the UK. In a video shared on Twitter, Sudha Murthy quipped in Tamil that she made her husband, NR Narayan Murthy, a businessman, and her daughter made her husband the Prime Minister of the UK. She said that the reason for this is the glory of the spouse and that a wife can transform her husband. However, she joked that she could not change her husband.
According to an ANI translation, Sudha Murthy also said that Akshata influenced Rishi’s diet and that he now fasts every Thursday. Rishi Sunak, at the age of 42, is the youngest and wealthiest Prime Minister of Britain. Along with his wife Akshata Murthy, the couple is one of the richest in the country, with a cumulative net worth of USD 810 million. Akshata Murthy’s individual net worth alone is USD 721 million.
The couple has been very entrepreneurial with some decent portfolios and real estate investments. They own lavish houses across the UK and the US, and their aristocratic lifestyle has caused much ire in the UK public.
Sudha Murthy’s remark on her damad Ji (son-in-law) has caused quite a stir on the internet.
While some found it humorous, others have criticized it for being sexist and patriarchal. They argue that it reinforces the idea that a woman’s worth is tied to her husband’s success and that a wife’s role is to transform her husband into a successful man. However, some have defended Sudha Murthy’s statement, saying that it was a harmless joke and should not be taken out of context.

Sudha Murthy‘s humorous comment about her daughter making Rishi Sunak the Prime Minister of the UK has sparked a debate on social media. While some find it harmless, others argue that it reinforces patriarchal stereotypes. Nonetheless, Rishi Sunak’s rise to become the youngest and wealthiest Prime Minister of Britain, along with his wife Akshata Murthy, is an example of entrepreneurial success that has attracted both admiration and criticism.
