Recently, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut took to Twitter to defend filmmaker SS Rajamouli after he faced backlash from the right wing for his recent interview with The New Yorker.
In the interview, Rajamouli expressed his views on religion and Hindu texts, stating that he used to be strictly religious but now he is an atheist who still loves Mahabharat and Ramayana, but as moved away from their religious aspects.
OpIndia took excerpts from the interview on their website, with the headline,
‘Inspired by ‘The Fountainhead’, SS Rajamouli says ‘religion is essentially a kind of exploitation’: Here is what the RRR, Bahubali Director said’.
The whole thing created a trouble for the director as he received widespread criticism from the right wing, who accused Rajamouli of being anti-religion and anti-Hindu.
Recently Kangana Ranaut, however, defended the filmmaker and called out the right wing for not supporting the film industry.
In a series of tweets, she mentioned that Rajamouli had made India proud with his films and that it was wrong to target him for his personal beliefs.
She also expressed her disappointment with the right-wing for not standing up for the film industry tweeting that they were quick to attack those who didn’t agree with them but never spoke up in support of artists and filmmakers.
In a series of tweets, she wrote,
“World has stamped controversial on him for what? What controversy he did? He made a film called Bahubali to glorify our lost civilisation, or he made nationalistic RRR? Or he wore dhoti to international red carpets? What controversy he did ? Please tell me.”

SS Rajamouli was heard saying,
“I slowly started moving away from religion. Even at that time, my love for stories like the Mahabharata or the Ramayana never diminished. I did start pushing away from those texts’ religious aspects, but what stayed with me was the complexity and the greatness of their drama and storytelling.”
