Even though we are living in 2023, there are some societal stigmas that are so deeply rooted in the environment. And most of these stigmas are related to women. Women are always expected to play to the roles society perceives them to play. If you have watched the popular Bollywood movie Cocktail then you must surely remember Deepika Padukone’s character.
In the film, Deepika Padukone portrays the character of Veronica which was very bold, outspoken one and was exactly what people would call “too much”. She used to drink like a fish and had clothes all over her floor. Although she made a decent living, she wasn’t really the stereotypical women who do household chores on daily basis. To be more likable and desirable for Gautam and his mother, Veronica had to tone down her actual “too much” self a little.
She was seen wearing salwars and kurtas, dedicating time for poojas, trying her hands at the laundry, and cooking biriyani to win Gautam’s heart.
Recently, a tweet throwing shade at women drinking nowadays has gathered attention on Twitter
Girls nowadays can drink
like their father, but can't
cook like their mother.— Akash Prazapati (@prazapatizi) April 17, 2023
For ages, the concept of women being submissive has been ingrained in people’s minds to make them more attractive and beloved. Women are expected to conform to the “sanskaari” stereotype of cooking, cleaning, wearing traditional attire, avoiding being loud, refraining from drinking, and speaking softly, among other things. This notion has become so deeply rooted in our thinking that jokes about outspoken or opinionated women are considered acceptable
A guy on Twitter wrote that women nowadays can drink like their dads but can’t cook like their moms.
Here is how women reacted to this sexist tweet
I can cook like my mom and grandmom and drink like my father too… aab bolo!! Aur kya kar ke dikhana hai?
