Renowned boxer Mary Kom appeared on ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ and had a minor clash with the host, Kapil Sharma, following his repeated jokes about boxers and boxing.
The eleventh episode of ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ showcased a star-studded lineup of India’s celebrated athletes, including Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, Sift Kaur Samra, and Mary Kom. The episode was widely appreciated by viewers, celebrating the achievements of these sports icons. However, it garnered significant attention due to an exchange between Mary Kom and Kapil Sharma.
Kapil Sharma’s Jokes and Mary Kom’s Reaction
During the show, Kapil Sharma asked Mary Kom about the mouthguards used by boxers. He humorously admitted that he had only seen boxing in movies and was unaware of mouthguards until later in life, leading him to mistakenly believe that boxers chewed pan before fights. His remark amused the audience:
“Mary, I watch boxing in movies, and before the fight, the coach puts a denture guard in the boxer’s mouth. ‘Why does every boxer chew pan before boxing?’ was a question I used to have. I learned about this really late.”
Mary Kom’s Fitting Response
While the audience laughed, Mary Kom found the joke disrespectful towards boxers and the anger was clearly visible on her face that she was upset by his joke. The comedian told the former boxer, “Don’t be angry”, in response to which Mary said:
“No, I am not, I have never been angry but now, you are enraging me. You’ve been pulling my leg.”
Kapil, noticing her displeasure, attempted to diffuse the situation. Mary Kom then explained the importance of mouthguards in boxing and other sports like ice hockey, accusing Kapil of unfairly singling out boxing:
“We wear the guard to protect our teeth. Not only in boxing but it is used for ice hockey as well. But you just pointed out boxing.”
Mary Kom’s pointed response amused the audience and startled Kapil Sharma, who quickly apologized, saying, “Maaf Karo.” He reassured her it was just a joke, part of his routine and is bread and butter, and urged her not to be angry. Mary Kom appeared more at ease later in the show, with clips of the interaction circulating online.
