When Jasprit Bumrah emerged onto the Indian cricket scene, it marked a pivotal moment as India transitioned towards emphasizing fast bowlers alongside spinners. With the leadership of captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri, there was a concerted effort to cultivate a strong contingent of fast bowlers.
Jasprit Bumrah swiftly became emblematic of this shift. Whether in Test matches, T20s, or ODIs, his unorthodox bowling action posed a formidable challenge for opposing batsmen.
During an interview, Bumrah’s wife, Sanjana, queried him about his past aspirations of relocating to Canada:
“You wanted to go to Canada and set up a new life there?”
Sanjana, the fast bowler’s wife, asked Bumrah.
“We have had these conversations before. Every boy wants to make it big and play cricket. Every street has 25 players who want to play for India. You have to have a backup plan. Our relative lives there. I though I will finish my education and…my uncle lives there. First we though we would go as a family, then my mum did not want to go there as it’s a different culture. I am very happy and very lucky that things worked out, Otherwise I don’t know I would have tried to play for the Canadian team and do something there as well. Glad it worked out here. I am playing for the Indian team and Mumbai Indians,”
Bumrah revealed on Jio Cinema.
Reflecting on his tenure with the Mumbai Indians (MI), Bumrah highlighted its profound impact on his cricketing journey:
“Its been very good, came here as a 19-year-old…didn’t even think that I will play that year but then Jon Wright saw me and that’s it. Over the years, I have grown here and have had interesting journeys. We won the IPL five times and I was a part of all the winning squads, so yes, it has been a great journey,”
Bumrah remarked.
Recalling his initial awe at sharing the dressing room with cricketing icons like Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, Bumrah expressed:
“I came here as a teenager, and in the early years when I came here I had not seen these players before… I played with Sachin Tendulkar, Mitchell Johnson was there. I was just looking at it and thought “am in the wrong place? This feels weird”… From there to now being 30, being a father, this team has seen my whole journey and I have grown as an individual. I didn’t even thibk that I would be here for this long, but I am really grateful to MI,”
Bumrah concluded.
