Adhyayan Suman addressed the online criticism faced by Sharmin Segal, emphasizing the importance of accepting reality and understanding oneself. He advised that Sharmin should engage with audiences, as they are generally kind and willing to offer second chances.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s entry into the OTT space with the much-anticipated web series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” unexpectedly brought his niece, Sharmin Segal, into the spotlight. Sharmin, who plays Alamzeb, has been criticized for her “expressionless” acting and “monotone” delivery.
Adhyayan Suman and his father, Shekhar Suman, shared their thoughts on the matter.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Adhyayan stressed,
“I think it’s very important to not live in a bubble. It’s very important to accept any sort of reality, not just Heeramandi, per se. It’s very important to understand who you are, it’s very important to understand whether you have it in you to fight the next 15-20 years. It’s important for you to not lie to yourself.”
He added,
“If she is being criticised for her performance, she should come out and speak to people. The audiences are very gentle, they’ll give you another chance if they feel you’ve worked hard.”
Shekhar Suman echoed similar sentiments, advising Sharmin to evaluate the credibility of the criticism and make necessary improvements if valid.
“If you think there is some credibility to the criticism, do some quick thinking about why they’re saying that, and if you feel they have a point, correct yourself and prove them all wrong. And if they’re doing just for the heck of it, then ignore them.”
He noted that Sanjay Leela Bhansali wouldn’t have cast her if she lacked potential, labeling some of the criticism as unfair.
In an exclusive conversation with News18 Showsha, Sharmin Segal responded to the trolling. She acknowledged that audiences have a right to their opinions, whether positive or negative.
“The audience is the king at the end of the day. And as a creative person, it’s very important to acknowledge that. They have a right to their opinion – positive or negative. That’s one thing that gives me perspective and allows me to be okay.”
Sharmin observed that while the internet often highlights negative feedback, she has also received many positive responses
. “I had given my all to Alamzeb’s character. We tend to fixate on the negatives but there are so many positives that have also come along, which we don’t talk about. It’s perhaps not interesting enough to talk about positives and we tend to look over them to some degree,”
she remarked.
She appreciated the range of feedback she received, viewing it as a valuable part of her growth as an actor and a person.
“I saw positivity, constructive criticism, and a whole range of feedback and that’s what happens when you put yourself out there as an artist or an actor. It was actually quite nice to hear all sides of things. It’s an inevitability. Opinions shape you as an actor and a human being. These are actual humans responding to you and it makes you realise how many people you can reach. These opinions are very important,”
she added.
