Christmas 2023 brought joy and a share of legal concerns for Ranbir Kapoor, who, along with Alia Bhatt, captivated fans by unveiling their one-year-old daughter, Raha Kapoor. Despite the warmth of the family revelation, a video from the Kapoor Christmas lunch, held at Kunal Kapoor’s residence, triggered controversy for the acclaimed actor.
In a video snippet circulating online, Ranbir Kapoor faced accusations of hurting religious sentiments during the cake-cutting ceremony.
A complaint was lodged on December 27, 2023, at a Mumbai police station by Sanjay Tiwari, represented by lawyers Ashish Rai and Pankaj Mishra. The complaint alleged that Kapoor, while setting the Christmas cake ablaze, poured liquor over it and chanted ‘Jai Mata Di,’ a religious invocation.
The complainant argued that such actions offended Hindu sentiments, as the fire god is traditionally invoked before other deities in Hindu rituals.
As of now, no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in the case. The video depicted Ranbir Kapoor, seated beside Alia Bhatt, participating in the cake-lighting ritual, where he uttered ‘Jai Mata Di’ after alcohol was poured on the cake. The festive atmosphere was contagious, with other family members joining in the chant.

While the legal repercussions unfold, the Kapoor family’s Christmas celebration was not solely marred by controversy. The unveiling of Raha Kapoor’s first look, adorned in a charming Christmas outfit, added a delightful touch to the festivities. The blue-eyed star kid donned a pink and white tulle dress with Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer embellishments, complete with red shoes and pink floral clips.
The legal complaint against Ranbir Kapoor raises questions about the delicate balance between festive merriment and potential cultural insensitivity.
