The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 currency notes as part of its “Clean Note Policy.” However, these notes will continue to be accepted as legal tender until September 30, according to the RBI. To facilitate the process, the RBI has requested banks to provide deposit and exchange services for Rs 2,000 banknotes until September 30, 2023.
Starting from May 23, individuals can exchange their Rs 2,000 banknotes for other denominations up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at any bank. It is important to note that while the RBI has advised banks to stop issuing Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes immediately, the existing notes will remain valid currency. The introduction of Rs 2,000 notes took place on September 8, 2016, as a response to the government’s decision to demonetize the old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 to curb the circulation of black money. Subsequently, new currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denominations were introduced.
