Karan Johar said,
“I was sitting and watching television with my mom… and saw a promo of a reality comedy show on a supposedly respectable channel… a comic was mimicking me in exceptionally poor taste… I expect this from trolls and faceless and nameless people, but when your own industry can disrespect someone who has been in the business for over 25 years, it speaks volumes about the times we live in… this doesn’t even anger me it just makes me sad!”
Standing in solidarity with Johar, Ektaa Kapoor, a prominent figure in the entertainment sphere, echoed his sentiments, decrying what she termed as ‘ugly humor.’ Kapoor highlighted the prevalence of such instances, both on television shows and during award ceremonies, urging for a shift towards more respectful forms of entertainment. She suggested that instead of resorting to caricatures, comedians should consider mimicking Johar’s cinematic creations, thereby honoring his contribution to the film industry.
“Happened so many times! Ugly humour is sometimes on shows and even at award functions. And then they expect you to attend. Karan, please ask them to imitate one movie or classic of yours.”
Meanwhile, Kettan Singh, the comedian at the center of the controversy, offered his apologies to Johar, emphasizing his admiration for the filmmaker’s work.
Singh clarified that his intention was never to cause offense but rather to entertain his audience. Expressing remorse for any unintended disrespect, Singh extended a sincere apology to Johar, acknowledging the impact of his actions.
“I would like to apologise to Karan (Johar) sir. First of all, whatever impersonation I do is because I love watching Karan Johar on his show, Koffee With Karan. I observe him a lot. I am a fan of his work. I have watched his latest film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani almost 5 to 6 times. My intention was not to hurt him. I just wanted to entertain the audience but if I did something wrong, I would like to say sorry to him.”
The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the power of humor and the importance of mutual respect within the entertainment fraternity. It prompts reflection on the boundaries of comedic expression and underscores the need for sensitivity when parodying public figures. As the industry navigates such complexities, it is imperative to uphold values of dignity and professionalism, ensuring a culture of inclusivity and respect for all.
