When Dharmendra’s recent movie, “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya,” hit theaters, reports surfaced suggesting he altered his name after 64 years in Bollywood. In the film’s credits, his name appeared as Dharmendra Singh Deol.
Speaking to Zoom in an interview, Dharmendra explained his decision to drop his middle name and surname. He expressed pride in his surname ‘Deol’ and had used it with his sons Sunny and Bobby’s names. However, since heroes were commonly known by their first names in the past, Dharmendra chose to go by his first name only. He said:
“I was always a proud Deol. The surname was always a part of our family. If you see, my sons Sunny and Bobby have always put out their full names. When I came into the film industry, actors avoided surnames: Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Sanjay Khan, Biswajeet, Sanjay (Sanjay Khan)…I also preferred to be known as just Dharmendra. It is never too late to do anything in life.”
