The incident dates back to the mid-1940s when Vajpayee was a student at DAV College, Kanpur.
Learning that his parents were planning his marriage, Vajpayee, alarmed by the prospect, fled his home.
Seeking refuge at his friend Gorey Lal Tripathi’s house, both being close friends and part of RSS, Vajpayee locked himself in a room for three days.
Tripathi’s son, Vijay Prakash, shared details of this episode, explaining that during these three days, Vajpayee would knock when he needed something, and Tripathi would provide it.
“My father used to tell us that Atalji had locked himself in the room meant for guests. He didn’t come out for three days. Atalji had asked my father to lock the room from outside. He would knock at the door from inside when he needed water or food or to go to toilet,”
Vijay says.
In the interview, Vijay Prakash disclosed Vajpayee’s response when asked by his father why he was avoiding marriage.
