Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s disreputable romance was witnessed on the gossip sections of all major newspapers back then. Salman was accused of abusing Aishwarya physically, and eventually they both called off their relationship. They worked together in one of Bollywood’s most remarkable films, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Aishwarya and Salman fell for each other in 1997 according to reports. Surprisingly, Salman was already in a relationship with Somy Ali at the time, and he himself was a successful Bollywood celebrity.
After celebrating the success of the film, there were rumors all around that the lead actor and actress were dating. Salman’s ex, Aishwarya Rai, became talk of the town. As a result of it Somy Ali left Salman Khan and moved to the United States.
Why Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai broke up?
Salman and Aishwarya became closer, and the actress was reportedly close to Salman’s sisters Alvira and Arpita Khan as well. Khan family was quite happy with their relationship but Aishwarya’s family was totally against it.
There was an incident in 2001, when Salman reached Aishwarya’s apartment and started banging the door of her house asking her to let him in. The neighbors who witnessed the incident told media that Salman desperately wanted to propose her for marriage but Aish wasn’t ready at that time.
Their relationship ended on bad terms
When Salman and Aishwarya were dating, they experienced each and everything from romance to controversy followed by backlash. In a previous interview with the TOI, Aishwarya Rai talked about her breakup with Salman. She said,
“Salman and I broke up last March, but he isn’t able to come to terms with it. After we broke up, he would call me and talk rubbish. He also suspected me of having affairs with my co-stars. I was linked up with everyone, from Abhishek Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan. There were times when Salman got physical with me, luckily without leaving any marks. And I would go to work as if nothing had happened.”
As per Pinkvilla, Aishwarya told revealed different stories of Salman Khan and his misbehaviour. She told,
“I stood by him enduring his alcoholic misbehaviour in its worst phases and in turn I was at the receiving end of his abuse (verbal, physical and emotional), infidelity and indignity. That is why like any other self-respecting woman I ended my relationship with him.”
Aishwarya has previously told that Salman was having an affair while he was in relationship with her. Salman Khan, reacted to these charges in an interview with a top daily a few months later after Aishwarya’s statement, saying,
“No. I have never beaten her. Anyone can beat me up. Any fighter here on the sets can thrash me. That is why people are not scared of me. I do get emotional. Then I hurt myself. I have banged my head against the wall; I have hurt myself all over. I cannot hurt anyone else. I have only hit Subhash Ghai. Yet, I apologized to him the next day. There are times when you do get out of control. That person hit me with a spoon, almost broke a plate on my face, pissed on my shoes and grabbed me by the neck. I could not control myself. And see what happened. The next day, I had to go and apologize.”
According to reports, Aishwarya made a public announcement that she will never work with Salman in the future for the sake of her mental well-being and self-respect. She further stated that Salman Khan’s Chapter was a nightmare for her and she is now relieved that it is was of 2 years only and has finally ended.
