In a surprising revelation, former South Africa captain Dean Elgar has made a serious accusation against Indian cricket star Virat Kohli, claiming that Kohli spat at him during a past encounter in India.
Elgar, who recently retired from international cricket, shared this incident on the “Banter, with The Boys” podcast alongside former all-rounder Chris Morris.
The alleged incident took place during South Africa’s 2015 tour of India, where Kohli’s team emerged victorious with a 3-0 win in a four-Test series played on spin-friendly pitches. Elgar expressed his discontent with the playing conditions, describing the wickets as challenging.
He recounted facing spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and claimed that Virat Kohli spat at him during the match.
“Those wickets were jokes. Like playing on that… that surface there. And I came into bat and I was actually like holding my own against (Ravichandran) Ashwin and what’s his name Jeja (Ravindra Jadeja) (smiles) and Kohli, he like spat at me.”
Elgar revealed his response to Kohli’s action, stating,
“I said to him if you do that, I’ll f*****g ***** you with this bat.”
When questioned about whether Kohli understood his South African profanity, Elgar clarified that Kohli, having spent time with AB de Villiers, comprehended the language. Elgar emphasized that even AB de Villiers was taken aback by Kohli’s behavior and confronted him, asking why he spat at Elgar.
“Yes, he did because de Villiers was his teammate at RCB, so he understood. And I said if you do that, I’ll … on this field, I’ll absolutely knock you out. And then [he said] ‘Hey F*** you, F*** you’ (mimicking the Indian) but barking up the wrong tree yeah. Anyways, we are in India so you got to be a little bit cautious,”
Surprisingly, Kohli later apologized to Elgar during the 2018 tour. Elgar disclosed that Kohli approached him, expressing regret for his past actions, and invited him for drinks after a series. Elgar shared that they spent the night drinking, noting that it occurred during a time when Kohli was still consuming alcohol.
“Two three years later, Kohli pulled me aside and said ‘listen, can we go and have a drink after the series I want to apologise for my actions’. So we drank till 3 in the morning. This is when he used to drink,”
Dean Elgar concluded.
