Renowned Bollywood figure Huma Qureshi has strongly condemned the online harassment faced by actress Deepika Padukone following her participation in Koffee With Karan season 8. Qureshi voiced her disdain towards internet trolls, highlighting the prevalent trend where celebrities become subjects of unwarranted criticism for various aspects of their lives.
During an interview with AfterHours with All About Eve, as cited by Hindustan Times, Huma Qureshi was prompted to comment on the rampant social media trolling, particularly the derogatory remarks directed at Deepika Padukone regarding her personal relationships.
Expressing her frustration, Qureshi remarked,
‘Ab kya bol sakte hai, kuch nahi bol sakte hain”.
‘What can we even say now? There’s nothing we can say.”
She further expressed her disbelief, stating,
”It’s absurd. Let’s normalize things. What’s the issue here? Yet, we are expected to conform to certain expectations.”
“Ridiculous. Be normal about it. Like what is the problem? No, but we are supposed to present a kind of palatable something that they are expecting”.
Qureshi also addressed the concerning trend of celebrities becoming targets of online abuse for no valid reason.
Amidst the scrutiny faced by star kids for their perceived detachment from reality, Qureshi pointed out the paradoxical situation where figures like Sara Ali Khan are criticized for being ‘too relatable’. Reflecting on the pervasive trolling culture, Qureshi remarked, ”We’re immersed in this culture of trolling. Everyone becomes a target. People are criticized for wearing black, for not wearing black. It’s relentless.”
For context, during her appearance on Koffee With Karan season 8, Deepika Padukone revealed that she and Ranveer Singh had not made a ‘real commitment’ to each other until they got engaged, implying that they were ‘technically allowed’ to explore other relationships during their courtship.
