In the past, Sitharaman has highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing middle-class challenges through measures outlined in the Union Budget 2024. Speaking to Times Now, she mentioned efforts such as increasing the standard deduction from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000 and introducing a new tax regime aimed at lowering tax rates for middle-income groups.
The Budget 2024 proposed revised income tax slabs under the new regime, providing relief for individuals with taxable incomes of up to ₹10 lakh. Taxable incomes up to ₹7 lakh were made exempt from tax, ensuring relief for a significant segment of taxpayers.
Sitharaman also empathized with the struggles faced by the middle class, stating, “I am also from the middle class… and understand their problems.”
Her response on X reinforces the government’s willingness to engage with public concerns and work towards solutions for India’s middle class.
