Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan’s relationship blossomed on the sets of Umrao Jaan, though Abhishek had admired her from afar since she was filming Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya in Switzerland, coincidentally with his close friend Bobby Deol. Introduced by Bobby, the two formed a connection, eventually growing close while working on Dhoom 2, Umrao Jaan, and Guru. They married in 2007 in a grand ceremony, and in 2011, they welcomed their daughter, Aaradhya.
Recently, rumors have surfaced suggesting trouble in their relationship, with claims of Aishwarya and Aaradhya living separately. However, a video from 2009 of Aishwarya and Abhishek on The Oprah Winfrey Show has resurfaced, where the couple discussed their grand wedding and Indian traditions.
Oprah remarked that such an elaborate celebration would make divorce difficult, to which Aishwarya lightheartedly replied,
“We don’t even try and entertain the thought.”
The discussion continued, with Oprah curious about living with family post-marriage, a common practice in India. Abhishek shared how living with his parents is a tradition carried from his father, Amitabh Bachchan, and that his mother, Jaya Bachchan, encourages family meals whenever possible.
Abhishek also recalled his romantic proposal. While filming in New York, he would stand on his hotel balcony, envisioning a future with Aishwarya. He later proposed to her on that very balcony.
“I was filming in New York for a movie, and I used to stand on my balcony of my hotel room and wish that one day wouldn’t it be nice if I was together with Aishwarya, married? So I took her to the very same balcony, and I asked her to marry me.”
In another interview, Aishwarya shared a memorable moment from their honeymoon flight to Bora Bora. When a stewardess addressed her as “Mrs. Bachchan,” she and Abhishek laughed, and it struck her that she was now officially “Mrs. Bachchan.”
“It was on the flight to our honeymoon in Bora Bora. The stewardess welcomed me on-board saying, ‘Welcome, Mrs Bachchan.’ And Abhishek and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing! And it hit me, I’m married! I’m Mrs Bachchan!”
