Relations between India and Canada have been increasingly strained in recent months. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited India during the 2023 G-20 Summit, where he had a separate meeting with PM Narendra Modi. However, at the recently concluded G-20 Summit in Brazil, no meeting occurred between the two leaders, raising questions about the state of their bilateral ties.
A Frosty Encounter in Brazil
During the summit in Rio de Janeiro, Trudeau seemed to face cold treatment. While PM Modi met leaders from several nations, including Italy, Norway, and South Korea, no engagement with Trudeau was reported. Photos of Modi’s meetings with other leaders were shared widely, but none included the Canadian PM. This absence has fueled speculation about deliberate avoidance due to strained relations.
A video from the summit shows PM Modi appearing to ignore Trudeau during a group photo session. U.S. President Joe Biden, standing between the two, briefly conversed with Modi. While Trudeau seemed to attempt interaction, Modi directed his focus elsewhere after a brief acknowledgment.

Modi’s Active Summit Engagement
Despite no meeting with Trudeau, Modi held discussions with leaders from Brazil, Chile, and Argentina, emphasizing cooperation in areas like defense, biofuels, and agriculture. He also praised Brazil’s efforts in hosting the summit, which drew inspiration from India’s leadership during the previous year’s G-20 Summit.
While no official statements have been made by either side, experts suggest that ongoing tensions may have led to the leaders avoiding direct engagement. This incident highlights the growing rift between India and Canada, leaving their future diplomatic relations uncertain.
