Kangana Ranaut, actress and BJP MP, has weighed in on the topic of songs centered around alcohol, drugs, and violence. During her appearance at Agenda Aaj Tak, she was asked whether she would bring this matter to Parliament. In her response, Ranaut emphasized shared responsibility between the government and the public.
“Artistic expression is not dependent on anything. Himachal folk music has so many such songs. In art, it’s the emotions that matter. To each their own. That being said, when it comes to habits like substance abuse, it is not just the government’s responsibility, but also that of the general public.”
she remarked.
The Diljit Dosanjh Controversy
This discussion comes in the wake of a recent controversy involving singer Diljit Dosanjh. During his Hyderabad concert on the Dil-Luminati Tour, Dosanjh faced restrictions from the Telangana government against performing songs promoting alcohol. In response, he adjusted the lyrics of tracks like Lemonade and 5 Taara, replacing references to “daaru” and “theka” with “coke” and “hotel.” Dosanjh, a self-proclaimed teetotaler, even offered to pledge against such songs if alcohol shops were banned across the country.
Following similar restrictions, Dosanjh avoided performing alcohol-themed songs in Ahmedabad. His next stop is Chandigarh on December 14, with the Dil-Luminati India Tour 2024 concluding on December 29 in Guwahati.
