In a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 16, Amitabh Bachchan shared a memorable story involving the legendary industrialist Ratan Tata. Known for his remarkable contributions to business and society, Ratan Tata left a profound impact on countless lives before his passing on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86. While his passing was widely mourned across India, Amitabh Bachchan’s recollections of Tata during the show struck an emotional chord with many.
During an episode featuring Farah Khan and Boman Irani, Amitabh Bachchan recounted an anecdote about Tata that showcased his humility and simplicity. Bachchan shared how he once found himself on the same flight as Ratan Tata. Upon arriving at Heathrow Airport, Tata’s pick-up did not arrive, leaving him in need of assistance.
Spotting Amitabh Bachchan outside a phone booth, Ratan Tata approached him with an unexpected request: he needed to borrow some money for a call.
Reflecting on this moment, Bachchan expressed surprise at the humble request from a figure as esteemed as Tata, saying,
Now the people who had come to pick him up must have left and they were not seen. So, he went into the phone booth to call. I too was standing outside. After some time he came and I couldn’t believe that he said this! ‘Amitabh, can I borrow some money from you? I don’t have money to make a phone call!’
This encounter was the first time the two had met, and Tata reportedly did not recognize the superstar. Bachchan mentioned how this incident reinforced the value of humility and simplicity in his life. Following Tata’s passing, Bachchan penned a heartfelt tribute, noting,
An era has just passed away. His humility, his great resolve, his vision and his determination to accomplish the very best for the Nation are ever a pride. It was my greatest honor to have had an opportunity and privilege to work together towards common humanitarian causes. A very sad day.”
As Amitabh Bachchan fondly remembers the legacy of Ratan Tata, it’s a reminder of how Tata’s humility and dedication left an indelible mark on the nation and inspired people across generations.
