During a parliamentary session on Monday, July 1, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in India’s Lok Sabha, criticized the BJP government, accusing it of a “systematic and a full-scale assault on the idea of India, the Constitution and on the people who resisted the attack on the Constitution.” on the nation. Gandhi brought posters of Lord Shiva and Sikh Guru Sri Guru Nanak Dev to highlight his points.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that assaults on opposition leaders, including himself, were directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He described the attacks as part of a broader strategy to undermine the Indian Constitution and target those who resist.
“Anyone who resisted the idea of concentration of power and wealth, aggression on poor and Dalits and minorities was crushed,” he stated, adding, “I was attacked by the order of Govt of India, by the order of the Prime Minister of India…The most enjoyable part of it was the 55 hours of interrogation by ED…”.
In his address, Rahul Gandhi claimed that opposition leaders were being imprisoned and that efforts to centralize power and wealth, as well as aggression towards the poor, Dalits, and minorities, were being forcefully implemented. He recounted his own experience, including a 55-hour interrogation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), as part of this alleged crackdown.
Drawing on religious examples, Gandhi stated that all religions advocate for courage and fearlessness. He expressed pride in being part of the opposition, emphasizing that for him and his party, truth is more important than power.
“All our great men have spoken about non-violence and ending fear.”
Although Speaker Om Birla prevented him from showing an image of Lord Shiva, Gandhi argued that true Hindus do not spread fear and hatred, contrasting this with what he described as the BJP’s constant promotion of both. He concluded by indirectly addressing PM Modi, asserting,
“But, those who call themselves Hindu only talk about violence, hatred, untruth… Aap Hindu ho hi nahi (You are not a Hindu).”
