. Originally from Baisi village in Bihar’s Supaul district, Udit has showcased his versatility by singing in multiple languages, including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Nepali, Malayalam, and Bhojpuri. His achievements include four prestigious National Awards.
Recently, Udit Narayan made headlines after a video of him kissing a fan during a live show went viral. Following severe backlash on social media, he defended his actions. However, this is not the first time the singer has been embroiled in controversy. His marriage scandal had once caused a major stir, impacting his public image.
Udit Narayan’s First Wife: Ranjana Jha
Udit Narayan married Ranjana Jha in 1984, a time when he was yet to achieve fame. Their marriage remained unnoticed in the media as he was still struggling to establish himself in the industry. In pursuit of a successful career, Udit moved to Mumbai, leaving Ranjana behind.
A Secret Second Marriage Without Divorce
While in Mumbai, Udit met Deepa, a fellow aspiring singer. The two fell in love, and in 1985, Udit married Deepa—without divorcing Ranjana. In 1987, the couple welcomed their son, Aditya Narayan.
Years later, Ranjana confronted Udit publicly, catching him off guard at a hotel in Patna, where he was staying for a concert. Accompanied by reporters, she exposed their marriage, accusing him of betrayal. She stated:
““I have come here to seek justice. He kept me in the dark about his second marriage with Deepa, also a playback singer, for years, and now I have come to seek my rightful place.”
Udit Narayan Denied the Allegations
Initially, Udit denied Ranjana’s claims, alleging that she was attempting to tarnish his reputation. However, Ranjana persisted, taking legal action against him. She also revealed that Udit had threatened to commit suicide whenever she attempted to make their marriage public.
“Whenever I threatened to go public about our marriage, he silenced me with the threat of committing suicide. Now I have no fears and I will take legal recourse.”
Udit Narayan Finally Acknowledged His First Marriage
When Ranjana presented evidence in court, Udit was compelled to accept their marriage. The controversy deeply affected his family, especially his son, Aditya Narayan, who was only 19 at the time. In response, Udit issued a formal statement:
“I, Udit Narayan, son of Harekrishna Narayan Jha, accept Ranjana as my wife and agree to provide for her maintenance and well-being.”
Ranjana Chose to Stay in the Marriage Alongside Deepa
Contrary to public assumptions, Ranjana did not seek financial compensation or alimony. Instead, she expressed contentment in being recognized as Udit’s wife, choosing to remain in the marriage along with Deepa. She stated:
“I have no complaint or grievances against the singer’s wife, Deepa Narayan, and their son, Aditya… I have got what a wife should have. I have not settled for any monetary allowance from the singer. He has agreed to keep me with him. It was a family matter, and our differences have been sorted out. He has agreed to keep me as wife along with Deepa.”
