Rajesh Khanna, celebrated as Bollywood’s “first superstar,” remains an iconic figure in the industry. Rising to fame in the 1960s, he sparked an era of unprecedented popularity in Indian cinema. Decades later, his lasting influence on Bollywood and popular culture remains unparalleled. Known for his unique style, versatile acting, and charismatic screen presence, Khanna is widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most esteemed actors.
However, not everyone held a favorable view of him. One of his critics is veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. Despite their public dispute happening nearly a decade ago, it continues to be a topic of discussion. Throughout it all, Rajesh Khanna’s daughter, Twinkle Khanna, has consistently defended her father’s legacy.
When Naseeruddin Shah Criticized Rajesh Khanna
In a 2016 interview with the Hindustan Times, Naseeruddin Shah shared some harsh opinions about Rajesh Khanna. He called him a “poor actor” and accused him of introducing mediocrity into Bollywood, stating:
“In fact, it was the ’70s when mediocrity came into Hindi films. That’s when the actor called Rajesh Khanna joined the industry. For all his success, I think Mr. Khanna was a very limited actor. In fact, he was a poor actor. Intellectually, he wasn’t the most alert person I have ever met. His taste ruled the industry.”

Other Actors Who Criticized Rajesh Khanna
Naseeruddin Shah wasn’t the only one to voice criticism. Others in the industry spoke of Khanna’s reported insecurities, unpunctuality, and arrogance. In a conversation with Movie magazine, Rajesh Khanna himself admitted to taking pride in Amitabh Bachchan’s professional setbacks.
In a recent interview, actor Prem Chopra mentioned that Khanna struggled to adapt to changes in the film industry, which ultimately led to his fading presence as his films began to falter at the box office. Additionally, his personal life reportedly suffered due to failed relationships, separation from Dimple Kapadia, and struggles with drinking.
