The Maha Kumbh, the world’s largest spiritual gathering, began on Paush Purnima (January 13, 2025). This iconic event, held every 12 years at one of four sacred locations in India, attracts millions seeking spirituality and enlightenment. Among the attendees this year was Laurene Powell, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
Laurene Powell Falls Ill After Ritual Bath
Laurene Powell expressed awe at the vast crowd at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. However, after taking a ritual dip in the Ganga river, she experienced health issues, including allergies. Her spiritual guide, Swami Kailashanand Giri, shared that she had not been accustomed to such a crowded environment and was recuperating in his camp. He explained her participation was motivated by a deep curiosity about Indian traditions.
“She will participate in the ritual of taking a dip (at the Sangam). She is resting in my ‘shivir’. She has some allergies. She has never been to such a crowded place. She is quite simple. She stayed with us during the pooja. Our tradition is such that those who have never seen it – they all want to join.”
Renamed ‘Kamla’ by Her Guru
Laurene received the name “Kamla” from her guru, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Kailashanand Giri, during her stay. Despite being one of the world’s wealthiest women, she impressed everyone with her simplicity, humility, and devotion. She has been living modestly in the camp and will return to the US on January 15, 2025, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President Donald Trump.
She has a new name here, Kamla. She is very simple, soft and bereft of ego and is here as she was inspired by the timeless sanatani culture.”
Laurene’s Connection to Sanatan Dharma
Swami Kailashanand Giri praised Laurene’s genuine interest in Sanatan Dharma and described her as a virtuous individual free from ego. Her spiritual quest and admiration for timeless Indian culture led her to the Maha Kumbh. Despite her global prominence, she embraced a simple lifestyle and refrained from any show of wealth during the event.
Her quest for spirituality brought her here. The way she has conducted herself in the akhara makes it clear that despite being among the world’s richest and most famous, she is sans all ego and does not show-off. Here she dresses simply and conducts herself gracefully.”
Laurene’s inspiring journey to Maha Kumbh highlights her dedication to spiritual exploration. As she recovers from her illness, well-wishers hope for her swift return to good health.
