South African cricketer Tabraiz Shamsi recently took a dig at Suryakumar Yadav’s catch during the 2024 T20 World Cup final, sparking a social media frenzy. The incident occurred during the final in Barbados, where Suryakumar’s remarkable catch at the boundary line became a hot topic. With South Africa needing 16 runs off the final over, David Miller’s wide full toss seemed destined for the boundary. However, Suryakumar managed to catch the ball just before stepping over the boundary, only to step back in and complete the catch, leading to controversy.
On Thursday, Shamsi posted on X, humorously suggesting that if the same method used in a local cricket match video had been applied during the World Cup final, the catch might have been ruled not out.
His post, however, didn’t sit well with many fans, who accused him of being a sore loser.
If they used this method to check the catch in the world cup final maybe it would have been given not out 😅 https://t.co/JNtrdF77Q0

In response to the backlash, Shamsi clarified that his comment was intended as a joke, writing,
“In case some people don’t understand that it’s meant to be a joke and no one is crying… let me explain it to you like a 4-year-old child. It’s A Joke.”

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his ambition to secure a place in the Indian Test team, stating that red-ball cricket remains a priority for him. Despite being a regular in India’s white-ball squads, Suryakumar has only played one Test match, scoring eight runs against Australia in February 2023. He acknowledges the challenge ahead, with players like Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, and Rajat Patidar also vying for a spot.
“I want to earn that spot again,” Suryakumar said, as quoted by the ICC. He noted that several players have performed well in his absence and deserve their opportunities. The 33-year-old will return to red-ball cricket in the Duleep Trophy, representing Mumbai, and will also participate in the Buchi Babu tournament.
