Reports had speculated that Gill, along with Avesh Khan, was released from the T-20 World Cup squad due to disciplinary issues, while Rinku Singh remained. Sources suggested that Gill’s focus on personal matters over professional responsibilities led to disagreements with team management and Sharma.
However, a senior BCCI source debunked these rumors, clarifying to PTI that Gill and Khan were only meant to stay with the squad through the Group League stage of the T-20 World Cup 2024. Rinku Singh, on the other hand, remains as a backup player for multiple positions, whereas Gill was only a backup for the openers, a role already covered by Yashasvi Jaiswal.
