Ratan Tata, the veteran industrialist and Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, is reportedly in critical condition at a hospital in Mumbai. This news comes just two days after the 86-year-old assured the public that his health was stable, explaining that his ongoing medical check-ups were routine and age-related.
According to a report from Reuters, citing sources with direct knowledge, Tata is currently in intensive care.
On October 7, Tata addressed concerns about his health through a social media post, dismissing circulating rumors and clarifying that there was no cause for alarm. He stated that he was undergoing routine medical examinations due to his age but remained in good spirits. He urged the public and media to avoid spreading misinformation.
Ratan Tata was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after experiencing a drop in blood pressure in the early hours of Monday.
Ratan Tata became Chairman of Tata Sons in 1991 and retired in December 2012. Under his leadership, the Tata Group saw significant growth, with revenues soaring from ₹10,000 crore in 1991 to over $100 billion in 2011-12. He was instrumental in several high-profile acquisitions, including Tetley by Tata Tea, Corus by Tata Steel, and Jaguar Land Rover by Tata Motors.
Following his retirement, Tata faced challenges with his successor, Cyrus Mistry, who was removed from his role as Chairman in 2016. Tata briefly returned as Interim Chairman before N Chandrasekaran took over in 2017, after which Tata became Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons.
