India’s Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi is one of the powerful leaders in the world. He came to power at the centre in 2014 and it was a landslide victory. He outplayed Indian National Congress (INC) and became the PM of India with a massive and historic mandate.

Being one of the most powerful leaders in the world and the most powerful person in India, he requires a high level of security. Recently, it was reported that India has obtained elite sniffer and attack dogs from Israel to strengthen Mr. Modi’s security. Call it the Special Protection Growl, these canines would add teeth to Modi’s protection programme.

Reportedly, around 30 “attack dogs, bomb sniffers and chasers” had been imported from Jerusalem over the past one year.

The canines include Labradors, German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois dogs and some rare breed which is supremely effective in combat.

There is no official confirmation on how much these costs but the Israeli media estimated in the past that each one is worth some tens of thousands of dollars.

These advanced measures have been taken seeing the heightened threat perception which has grown in the recent years. Hence the government wanted to beef up Modi’s security.

Modi had last month become the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Israel and during his three-day trip, he and his Israeli opposite number, Benjamin Netanyahu, had discussed several military and cyber-security deals, including drone missiles and a new, jointly built missile defence system. Though it’s still not clear whether they had touched upon fanged fortification.

Not much details about these four-legged protectors have been revealed since issues surrounding the Prime Minister’s security are a closely guarded affair. As per the reports received so far, the dogs are trained for attack and bomb-sniffing duties specifically designed to join the Special Protection Group tasked with security of senior officials, former prime ministers, and members of their families.

The SPG was set up in 1984, a year after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It has over 10,000 personnel, drawn mostly from the Border Security Force and the Central Reserve Police Force.

It’s usually the Indo-Tibetan Border Police that trains the SPG’s sniffer dogs. The paramilitary border force’s dog-training centre at Bhanu in Chandigarh is considered the best in the country. The training period is normally of 24 weeks and on an average, the border force trains a batch of 24 SPG dogs every six months.

“Israel is also helping us upgrade the dog-training centre,” an ITBP official said.

“During the training period, these dogs are given special food and kept in a hygienic environment. They are provided good facilities, including a swimming pool, and undergo regular medical check-ups,” the official added.

Sources said the Prime Minister’s Office had recently asked the Union home ministry and defence ministry to formulate a common training programme to upgrade all the military and paramilitary dog squads to the levels of the SPG’s canine units in 10 years.

Apart from these four-legged protectors, the National Security Guard which is always shielding PM Modi makes sure no external power does harm to him. The NSG is an Indian special forces unit under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Raised in 1984, its commandos are trained to combat terrorist activities with a view to protect states against internal disturbances.

Comprising of a total personnel strength of 14,500, the NSG commandos are called Black Cats as they’re dressed in black coloured drill cotton paired with the black cat insignia on their uniform. Struggling through a vigorous training along with going through a series of endurance, martial arts, and target-shooting tests, these Black Cat Commandos are a pro at taking head shots, two at one go!

These commandos are equipped with FN F2000  assault rifles and other sophisticated armory. They are always on lookout for danger and wear special glasses and shoes, which contributes to their swift mobility and vision.

Their bullet proof vests ensure they can withstand fire, in case of any unprecedented attack. Their armors are strong enough to withstand more than hundred rounds of fire.

Even their shoes are specially crafted to make sure they can withstand any type of terrain.
