PM Modi’s remarks come amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war, underscoring a need for international stability.
The relationship between Modi and Trump has been marked by strong diplomatic ties and mutual admiration, showcased in large public events such as “Howdy, Modi!” in Houston (2019) and “Namaste Trump” in Ahmedabad (2020). Their camaraderie has driven strategic cooperation, with a focus on defense, security, and a shared stance against terrorism, especially regarding Pakistan-based threats.
Both leaders have also aligned on the goal of a “free and open Indo-Pacific” to counter China’s influence, resulting in enhanced defense collaborations, joint military exercises, and India’s key role in the Quad alliance alongside the U.S., Japan, and Australia. However, trade tensions emerged due to Trump’s “America First” policy, leading to tariff disputes, although both countries aimed for more balanced trade agreements.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Modi-Trump relationship also led to health cooperation, with India supplying hydroxychloroquine to the U.S. and the U.S. supporting India’s pandemic response efforts.
With Trump’s win in 2024, the India-U.S. partnership may continue to deepen across strategic, defense, and economic sectors, with Modi hopeful that both nations can further global peace and stability.
