The attack occurred while Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The 78-year-old former president was shot in the right ear, with visuals showing security officials rushing him off the stage, blood visible on his face. A bystander was killed, and two others were critically injured as the shooter fired multiple rounds. The shooter, who was later killed by security personnel, has yet to be identified.
US President Joe Biden, who is set to face Trump in the upcoming November election, strongly condemned the attack and spoke to Trump after the incident. In an emergency briefing, Biden said,
“There’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country… We cannot be like this, we cannot condone this.”
Biden added, “The idea that there’s political violence, or violence in America like this, is just unheard of. It’s just not appropriate. Everybody must condemn it.”
In a post on X, Biden expressed his gratitude to the Secret Service for ensuring Trump’s safety and reiterated the need for national unity against such violence: “Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
