KK, a name that resonates deeply with music lovers, embarked on his Bollywood journey on October 25, 1996. Known for his soul-stirring voice, KK won hearts and left an indelible impact on his fans, who still find it hard to believe he’s gone.
Born as Krishnakumar Kunnath aka KK in Delhi to a Malayali family, KK initially worked as a salesman before deciding to follow his passion for music.
With his family’s support, he ventured into the industry, creating jingles with Shibani Kashyap and Saibal Basu. He soon moved to Mumbai, where his first jingle with Loy Mendonsa became popular. When music director Ranjit Barot asked him about his charges, KK expected Rs. 500, but was shocked to receive Rs. 5000.
KK’s big break came with AR Rahman’s songs Kalluri Saaley and Hello Doctor, while his first Bollywood song, Chhod Aaye Hum Wo Galiyan from Maachis, marked his official entry into playback singing. However, it was Tadap Tadap Ke from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam that made him a household name.
Over his career, KK recorded countless memorable songs in multiple languages. Despite his wide-reaching impact, he won only one award, for Khuda Jaane from Bachna Ae Haseeno, though he once mentioned he was never after awards.
Tragically, KK passed away on May 31, 2022, after suffering a heart attack during a performance in Kolkata. On October 25, 2024, Google honored him with a special doodle to commemorate his Bollywood debut anniversary.
In his own words, “Once I am on stage, I forget everything and simply perform,” KK truly left this world doing what he loved the most.
