Indian Railways serves as the backbone of long-distance travel for millions across India. However, securing confirmed tickets can be challenging, especially during peak seasons and festivals, even with the availability of special trains. Recently, a passenger faced an unusual situation when his Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) ticket unexpectedly shifted to a waiting list, sparking a reaction on social media.
Passenger’s Unexpected Ticket Issue
Kamlesh Shukla booked a ticket from Ghaziabad to Deoria Sadar for November 20. Initially, he received an RAC 42 status, allowing him partial travel privileges. However, his ticket status unexpectedly changed to GNWL 63 on the waiting list. Kamlesh, surprised and disappointed, shared his experience on X (formerly Twitter), tagging @RailMinIndia in his complaint:
“This morning, the PNR status was RAC 42, but by evening, it’s showing as Waiting 7. How did this happen?”

It is intimated that due to some technical reasons the message for ticket confirmation/RAC was delivered by system, later on issue was rectified by our technical team. Sorry for inconveniences.

Why Ticket Status Changes from RAC to Waiting List
An RAC ticket allows passengers to board the train but requires sharing a seat with another RAC passenger. If confirmed seats become available, the RAC ticket holder can receive a full berth. Occasionally, ticket statuses shift from RAC to waiting list due to technical glitches, such as server issues or software updates. Indian Railways has recently addressed these issues, assuring passengers that technical teams are actively working to prevent such disruptions.
Rail Madad App for Passenger Assistance
With increasing passenger grievances, Indian Railways encourages the use of the Rail Madad App to register complaints and track their status in real-time. This approach aims to provide passengers with efficient support and transparency, encouraging others to bring forward their issues.
