Govinda, a popular actor from the ’90s, gained immense fame for his remarkable acting, good looks, and charming personality. Starting his career in 1986 with “Love 86,” Govinda quickly rose to stardom with a string of hit movies, gathering a huge female fan following. Recently, his wife, Sunita Ahuja, shared an intriguing story about one of his fans who went to great lengths to get close to the actor.
On the “Timeout With Ankit” podcast, Sunita Ahuja opened up about her husband’s passionate fan base. She recalled an incident involving a minister’s daughter who disguised herself as a housemaid to stay with them for nearly a month. Sunita noticed that the girl seemed out of place and expressed her concerns to her mother-in-law, mentioning that she didn’t know how to perform basic household tasks.
Eventually, they discovered the girl’s true identity. Sunita said,
“There was this fan who pretended to be a house help and she stayed with us for around 20-22 days. I thought that she looked like she was from a well off family. I told my mother-in-law that she doesn’t know how to do the dishes or clean the house. Eventually, we got to know she was some minister’s daughter and a Govinda fan.”
Sunita further explained that she grew suspicious when the girl stayed up late, waiting for Govinda. After conducting a background check, the girl confessed to being a minister’s daughter and an ardent fan of Govinda. Later, her father arrived with four cars to take her back. Sunita added,
“ I was young at that time but I got suspicious. She used to stay up late and wait for Govinda. I was stunned. Finally, I got a background check for her. She then cried to us and confessed she was Govinda’s fan. Then her father came, and brought four cars with him. I think she worked with us for about 20 days. This is the kind of fan following he had.”
This incident is just one example of the intense fan following Govinda had during his prime.
When Govinda Reportedly Slapped a Fan and Later Apologized
In 2008, while filming “Money Hai Toh Honey Hai,” Govinda reportedly slapped a fan named Santosh Rai who had come to the set. It was said that the fan was behaving inappropriately with the dancers, prompting Govinda to take action. The actor explained, “Yes, I slapped him. The guy was trying to get too close to the girls. I felt that I had to take a stand.” The incident caused a stir as Govinda was also a Member of Parliament at the time, leading to widespread attention. Santosh Rai later filed an FIR against the actor, claiming, “Imagine being hit by someone you considered God.” Reports suggest that Govinda later apologized and offered the fan Rs. 5 lakh as a gesture of reconciliation.
