A Journey Rooted in Excellence
Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, Gukesh discovered his passion for chess at a young age. Raised in a Telugu-speaking family, he is the son of Dr. Rajinikanth, an ENT surgeon, and Dr. Padma, a microbiologist.
Gukesh first gained attention in 2015 when he won the U9 category at the Asian School Chess Championships. By age 12, he clinched the U12 World Youth Chess Championship and swept five gold medals at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in rapid, blitz, and classical formats.
His rapid ascent continued as he earned the International Master title in 2017. In 2019, at just 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days old, Gukesh became a Grandmaster, one of the youngest in history.
