Superstar Rajinikanth is celebrated for his remarkable talent and illustrious career in Indian cinema. However, a lesser-known chapter of his life involves his wish to marry the late actress Sridevi, which is a story worth revisiting.
Rajinikanth, who was 13 years senior to Sridevi, shared a protective and affectionate bond with her. During that time, only a few individuals, including Sridevi, Kamal Haasan, and director K. Balachander, had access to Rajinikanth’s personal phone number.
Their on-screen partnership began with the 1976 film ‘Moondru Mudichu’, where a young 13-year-old Sridevi debuted as a leading lady.
Rajinikanth played the antagonist, clashing with Sridevi’s character, who sought revenge as his stepmother. This film marked the beginning of their professional collaboration, spanning 19 films across various languages.
As their professional relationship grew, so did their friendship. Rajinikanth became close to Sridevi’s mother and reportedly expressed his desire to marry Sridevi.
In an old interview, K. Balachander revealed that Rajinikanth took a bold step by visiting Sridevi’s home to propose during a Griha Pravesh (housewarming) ceremony. However, a sudden power outage occurred when they entered the home together, which Rajinikanth interpreted as a bad omen. He chose to leave without revealing his intentions.
Despite this unfulfilled proposal, Rajinikanth and Sridevi’s friendship remained intact. The specifics of Sridevi’s feelings on the matter remain unknown.
On the professional front, Rajinikanth’s film ‘Vettaiyan’, directed by TJ Gnanavel, is set to release in October. The movie also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Rana Daggubati, Fahadh Faasil, and Manju Warrier in key roles. Rajinikanth will also be collaborating with Lokesh Kanagaraj for ‘Coolie’.
