Nayanthara recently found herself at the center of a legal controversy after Dhanush issued a legal notice regarding a BTS clip from his film, which she used in her Netflix documentary. The clip, which was featured for just three seconds, sparked a heated response from Dhanush, who accused her of copyright infringement. In turn, Nayanthara responded with an open letter addressing the issue.
Nayanthara’s Legal Team Defends Her, Citing Personal Library
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Nayanthara’s lawyer clarified that there was no violation of copyright laws. Rahul Dhawan, representing Nayanthara and her husband Vignesh Shivan’s production company, Rowdy Pictures Pvt. Ltd., stated:
“Our response is that there is no infringement or violation because what has been utilised by us in the docu series is not part of behind-the-scenes (from the film). The same is part of personal library, Therefore this is not infringement.”
The Dispute Escalates: Dhanush Demands Rs. 10 Crore for Copyright Infringement
The issue intensified when Dhanush demanded Rs. 10 crore in damages for the alleged copyright infringement, citing the use of the BTS clip in Nayanthara’s documentary. Nayanthara, in her response, expressed shock at Dhanush’s demand, noting that the video was publicly available. She further criticized Dhanush for his public persona, suggesting that he was far from the gentle image he projected. Many of Dhanush’s co-stars sided with Nayanthara, supporting her stance, though some speculated that the drama was part of a public relations strategy.
Dhanush’s Legal Team Responds: Requests Removal of Clip
In response to Nayanthara’s open letter, Dhanush’s legal team issued a statement demanding that Netflix remove the three-second clip from the documentary within 24 hours. The statement read:
Advice your client to take down the content infringing my client’s copyright over the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan by using the same in your client’s documentary named Nayanthara Beyond the Fairytale within 24 hours, failing which my client will be forced to initiate appropriate legal action, including but not limited to seeking damages to a sum of Rs. 10 crores against your client and Netflix India.”
