While the world was not sure if Vijaya Mallya will ever repay the amount of debt he took from the Nation and flew away, another businessman, Nirav Modi who is a diamond merchant has done the same.

He took a loan of Rs. 11,300 crores from Punjab National Bank and flew off to New York with his family to escape the law.

On the other hand, here ex-Prime Minister of our country Lal Bahadur Shastri’s wife Lalita repaid Rs.5000 car loan from her pension, that Lal Bahadur Shastri took from the same bank. Their son, Anil Shastri recalls:

“We went to St. Columba’s School on a tonga. Once in a while we used the office car but my father did not allow us to use it regularly for any kind of private work. There was a demand at home that we should buy a car,”

The loan was taken in the year 1964. Prime Minister’s special assistant, Venkatraman was enquired about the same, he revealed that the Prime Minister came to know that the new Fiat car costs about Rs.12,000 but the family only had Rs.7,000 in their bank. Prime Minister then applied for a loan of Rs. 5,000 loan which the bank sanctioned on the same day.

But soon after this, a tragedy struck the family and the complete nation by the untimely death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. His son said “The loan remained unpaid. It was repaid by my mother from the pension she received after my father’s death”.

The car that Lal Bahadur Shastri purchased with the help of loan was 1964 model Fiat, which had an impressive number, DLE 6. The car is still exhibited in the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial at 1, Motilal Nehru Marg in New Delhi.

Punjab National Bank was founded in 1894, with an idea to start a Swadeshi bank during the British Raj. The lesser known fact is, Lal Bahadur Shastri was one of the early board directors.

Incidents like this proves that life is definitely unfair with some people. What do you have to say about this?
