“We’ve heard of potato, tomato, but what does Zomato mean?” He playfully added, “I saw an ad where cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth were arguing about whether it’s ‘Zomato’ or ‘Zomaato’. So, what’s the real story behind it?”
Deepinder, smiling, explained that the name came about quite simply. He shared, “We initially wanted to go with ‘tomato dot com,’ but that domain was already taken.”
To overcome this challenge, Deepinder and his team came up with a creative solution – they altered the first letter, leading to the creation of the unique and memorable name: Zomato.
“So we changed the alphabet and got Zomato dot com.”
The Romantic Inspiration Behind Zomato’s Fun Notifications
Zomato users are familiar with the quirky, sometimes romantic notifications the app sends to encourage further food orders. During the episode, Deepinder gave a lighthearted peek behind the scenes, explaining that these notifications are inspired by his own romantic messages to his wife, Gia.
He shared with a laugh, “Sometimes, my romantic messages to Gia inspire the app’s notifications.” Deepinder then credited the Zomato marketing team for turning his idea of “building a relationship with the customer” into a playful marketing strategy, admitting, “I give full credit to our marketing team, who took my idea a bit too seriously!”

Deepinder’s friends had repeatedly urged him to meet a “special girl,” and when Gia visited Delhi for the first time, a close friend convinced him that this was the one.
His friend, with surprising certainty, told him, “If you meet her, you’ll end up marrying her.” Intrigued by his friend’s bold prediction, Deepinder agreed to meet Grecia, and that meeting marked the start of their beautiful relationship.
“I was intrigued to meet her, and then…” Deepinder reminisced, smiling.
