As tensions along the LOC with China continues, the Ministry of Information Technology has banned TikTok in India along with 58 other Chinese Applications. The government of India has taken this decision after a recent violent Indo-China clash at the Galwan Valley, which led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers. Following the violent clash, Social media was abuzz with Indians demanding a ban on Chinese products and applications.
Announcing the ban on the applications, a government press release stated:
“The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”.
59 applications which were banned by the government also included popular video creating application TikTok, which has taken over social media for quite sometime. The excessively simple to use application lets you create, and share short videos. People are going crazy over this application. As per records, in excess of 30 million Indians were using this application.
However, over the past few months, the application came under the scanner for its objectionable content. But now the application has been banned by the government.
