Fact Check: Is Srinivasa Gowda Really Faster Than Usain Bolt?

Srinivas Gowda, a name that is all over the news for the last couple of days, became an overnight star when Shashi Tharoor in a tweet hailed his brilliance and called him faster than Usain Bolt. He had tweeted:

Faster Than Usain Bolt? Karnataka Man Running With Buffaloes Covers 100 Metres in Just 9.55 Seconds. I urge the Athletics Association of India to take this man under their wing & make an Olympic champion of him. Wonder how many hidden talents we have,”

Here, check out his Tweet:

And since then, the 28-year-old jockey is all over the news. Well, Srinivas Gowda had run 142.5m in 13.62 seconds, which is equal to 100m in 9.52 seconds, which is 0.03 seconds faster than Usain Bolt. Yes, you read that right. Usain Bolt’s record is 9.55 seconds to run the same distance, which is also a world record at the same time.

Netizens are hailing him as the Indian Usain Bolt and are comparing his run with Usain Bolt after calculating their speed.

However, before we all elevate Srinivas Gowda to the level of Usain Bolt, there was a difference. While Usain Bolt’s run comes naturally. On the other hand, Gowda is tied up with buffaloes that pulls him. Another fact that trumps Bolt is that the speed was recording using a hand timing system, on the other hand, Bolt’s track speed is recorded using electronic timings.

Buffaloes have been known to run at 35mph, while the speed of Bolt is 27.8 mph. Considering the fact that the time of the track wasn’t recorded electronically clearly suggests that there is no specified correctness of it.

Srinivas was humble enough to admit that Bolt is a world-class athlete and he was nowhere in comparison. And to be brutally honest, he is right!
