An air of intolerance and communal violence strikes India once again. This time its over a big budget bollywood film ‘Padmavati’, which was set to be released on the 1st of December 2017 . Unfortunately , a Rajput community of Jaipur , Rajasthan , known as the Karni Sena is making sure the film dosent get released .
They have started various protest campaigns across various states in India and also speared death threats to the makers . The accusations are , that the film may hurt Rajput sentiments as it is based on the stories of their forefathers and an allegation was framed against the film which describes as ; a section of the film shows that Rani Padmavati is dreaming of lovemaking with Alauddin Khilji .
However , the director of the film Sanjay Leela Bhansali has clearly stated in various news channel interviews that the film dosent contain any sequence which goes with the accusations .
Bhansali’s statements were supported by a big house journalist named Arnab Goswami , who is beleived to have had the oppurtunity to see the film prior to its release and he stated and
I quote ” In our history , this Karni Sena will be left looking utterly foolish once this film hits the box office , because far from an intimate moment , Alauddin and Padmavati don’t even share a single frame together in the film .
So those people ravaging theatres and threatning nose cuts and acid attacks will be laughed across India and they will look like clowns .
Their vandalism will look politically sponsored when millions of Indians will watch this beautiful film that every moment of the film is dedicated to only one thing – the valour of the Rajput tradition . ”
So , what is exactly happenning ! Why so much violence is getting emoted over a work of fiction??!! . Even the Indian history as far as it is accounted , suggests that Rani Padmini or Padmavati is mentioned at its earliest when Malik Muhammad Jayasi , a sufi poet of India wrote an epic fictionalized poem known as Padmavat around 1540 CE .
The poem is written in Avadhi language and deals with the valour of the Rajputs against Alauddin Khilji led siege of Chittor and also says that before , Alauddin Khilji could capture Chittor, Rani Padmini and her companions performed Jauhar (self-immolation) to protect Rajput honour . The poem describes Rani Padmavati as a princess of the Sinhal kingdom of Sri Lanka , who possessed overwhelming beauty .
The poem also goes on to say that Alauddin Khilji attacked Chittor when he heard about Rani Padmini’s beauty and did so to take her away from Ratan Sen the Rajput ruler of Chittor who has won Padmavati’s hand through an adventurous conquest .
While Alauddin Khilji’s siege of Chittor is a historical fact , there are very little archeologicalor historical evidences to support Rani Padmavati’s physical existence .
However , the chief of Karni Sena named , Lokendra Singh Kalvi has countered this logic and said that he is directly related to Rani Padmavati as he belongs to the same bloodline of Ratan Sen and Rani Padmavati and he further added that a priest in Pushkar has got a family tree to prove the facts that Rani Padmavati was real .
Even if one agrees with the opinion that Rani Padmavati was real , is it right to incite violence on artistic freedom , when there is no way of making a film without little improvisations especially based on a legend that has so little archaeological evidence ?
A legend has to be improvised to make it suitable for a movie . Whether it will hurt someone’s sentiments or not , entirely depends upon the viewers once they have watched the film .
The protests this film is facing are based on assumed distortion of history and Rajput valour which lacks merit and encourages violence and impatience . If the film has got any narrative that may hurt sentiments it has to be watched by the protesters at least once before any assumptions .

And as Arnab Goswami said ” Because Padmavati in her greatness in this film will prove Karni Sena wrong and that truly is the brilliance of this controversy . Having seen the film the debate changes completely . ”
