Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella’s inspiration leadership in changing the fortunes of the company is nothing short of exemplary. The company was fast losing it’s steam in 2014 when he took over the reins from Steve Ballmer but 3 years since then, Microsoft has found it’s groove again and has even seen an increase in number of Windows users.
Satya Nadella has been instrumental in changing the action course of Microsoft, which has largely benefited it, resulting in more revenue and market share.
The game changing CEO will also be launching his book ‘Hit Refresh’ soon, though it has already started creating a buzz. The book will shed light on his personal and professional struggles and how dedicated he was towards his wife, Anu Nadella for whom he even gave up his Green card membership.
Satya Nadella married his wife in 1992 and wanted to bring her to US but the problem of immigration hit them. Taking about the complications that started occurring after his marriage, he writes in the book, ‘It was a happy time, but the complications of immigration would soon prove a challenge.’
Satya was working at Microsoft’s Redmond Headquarters as a technical evangelist when he married Anu in 1992. He held a permanent US citizenship himself and wanted to bring Anu in but unfortunately the immigration authorities rejected Anu’s visa application.
With short-term VISA not a feasible solution for the couple, Satya decided to give up his Green card as suggested by Microsoft’s immigration lawyer and re-applied for a H1B VISA. Though it was a risky step and he risked losing his permanent citizenship , it did allow him to get Anu along as H1B workers could bring over spouses.
Talking about the incident, he writes, “Well, the H-1B enables spouses to come to the U.S. while their husbands and wives are working here. Such is the perverse logic of this immigration law. There was nothing I could do about it. Anu was my priority. And that made my decision a simple one.”
After struggling for over an year, Satya went to the US embassy in Delhi and gave his green card back to an amused clerk. Miraculously for him, the idea worked and he got reunited with his wife. But his act of giving up his Green Card soon caught the eye of his colleagues who started trolling him by saying, “Hey, there goes the guy who gave up his green card”.
Satya Nadella’s love story symbolizes the power of true love and showcases his true character. What a man!
