On Tuesday, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio announced that it will hike its tariff rates in the next few weeks. The statement from Jio came as a big surprise to everyone. The news was made a day after Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Ltd announced a hike in their call and data charges from next month onwards.
Talking about the same, in a statement, the Reliance Jio claimed that the telecom regulator TRAI is likely to initiate a consultation process for revision in telecom tariffs. The statement read:
“Like other operators, we will also work with the government and comply with the regulatory regime to strengthen the industry to benefit Indian consumers and take measures including an appropriate increase in tariffs in next few weeks in a manner that does not adversely impact data consumption or growth in digital adoption and sustains investments.”
As per sources, the decision to hike the tariff rates by the telecoms is in response to the government constantly asking the companies to stop the long-drawn price war and set their business houses in order.
Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea Ltd. have announced plans to increased tariffs reported massive loses in the term ended in September 2019, with combined loses of Rs.74,000 crores.
Recently, as per TRAI data, Jio added 69.83 lakh new users to its network in September 2019, while Airtel and Vodafone lost over 49 lakh users.
Talking about the users, Vodafone still stands as the largest telecom service in terms of subscriber base, which is 37.29 crores. Jio is in the second position with 35.52 crores and Airtel has 32.55 crore subscribers.
Twitterati are left in shock after the announcement. Here, have a look at their reactions:
Expectations are that the increase in tariffs by competitors could benefit Jio by adding more users as users generally prefer to go to telecom operator which has lowest tariff rate along with strong network
So far, Reliance Jio has not announced any price hike unlike rivals 😍

After updegradation of technology from 2g to 5g and after making people habitual of smart phone. Now you turned towards higher tariff rate. This is blatant decision. Think of future generations. They will never forgive you.@VodafoneIN @Idea@jio

India has lowest Mobile Service Tariff; world is realising the benefits of Low Tariff. With rate cards that providers had prior to Jio, today India would have been 20 years behind in Digital Transformation & FinTech.
One should thank RIL & Jio for the Mobile Revolution in India pic.twitter.com/TECyDXumTj

RJIO which openly promised free lifetime voice calling couldn't able to stand by its promise within no time. It got pan India voice licence for ₹1600cr. Earlier clapped TRAI for reduced IUC rate. Now blaming TRAI for its tariff. Dear JIO how many jobs U have created till now?

No effective tariff increase: In spirit of customer welfare and since Jio was forced by TRAI decision, Jio has decided to give equivalent GB of data free at attractive rate of Rs 10/GB. Hence, there is no tariff increase #iloveJIO

You know the economy is bad when even the Ambanis have to increase tariffs of JIO to survive

Actually, no. Our tariff isn’t significantly different from what is charged in UK. Realised that on trip to UK. Only data is cheaper thanks to Jio, until they entered the market data cost was also on par. https://t.co/nnrtuYJcp8

Reliance Jio may increase tariff very soon.
That essentially means, Modi govt's only achievement is about to go for a toss.
